How do I renew my apportioned registration?

Renewal Timeline

Every apportioned registration in the state of Pennsylvania expires on May 31st

  • By February 1st: IRP sends your renewal application.

  • By February 15th: You should receive your application. If you have not, call IRP at 1-800-932-4600 or 1-717-412-5300 (if calling from an out of state phone number) for a new application. If you have your mileage and application, we can assist  you in the process.

  • By March 15th: IRP should send your invoice. If you have not received an invoice, contact IRP.

  • Before May 1st: Bring your invoice and payment to Swift Auto Tags and we take care of sending payment to Harrisburg. If you visit our offices after May 1st, we can submit your payment and provide you with a temporary 60-day registration until IRP processes your payment.

PA apportioned registration renewals need to be completed by May 31. You can limit problems by starting early. Renewal applications are sent from IRP in the beginning of February. Follow the instructions, fill out the forms and send them back to the address listed on the form. At that point, you should receive an invoice in response to your completed application. Pay the invoice, attach the necessary documents and you should receive your credentials for the new registration year.

  • What happens if I have a question?
Call 1.800.932.4600. That is the number for the PennDot Call Center. You will be directed to the apportioned registration telephone system which may be able to assist you with basic questions without speaking directly to a representative. If you need to speak with a representative, leave a message and someone will return your call.

  • What happens if I don't receive a renewal application?
It is your responsibility to make sure you renew your registration properly and timely. If you fail to receive your renewal application or your invoice, this does not mean you will be allowed time beyond May 31 because you did not know have the paperwork. You will still be subject to fines and penalties if you operate your vehicle without valid credentials. You can contact PennDot to generate and resend a new application but these processes take time because of the increased workload.

  • What happens if I don't receive my invoice?
You can call the Call Center at 1.800.932.4600. You will need to leave a message stating that you need a new invoice and a new invoice will be generated and sent to you approximately 2 to 4 weeks. That is assuming they received your original application, processed the application, and an invoice was generated. If your application was never received, you will need to resubmit your application so that an invoice can be generated.

  • Time is running out and I started late on my renewal?
If you have not filed your application you will need to get that completed and submitted as quickly as possible. PennDot will accept your application but it will be subject to the regular processing time of 3 to 6 weeks. Renewal invoices get priority during renewal season. The Farm Show building in Harrisburg is only for individuals with invoices, supporting documents and payment. Applications will not be accepted or processed at the Farm Show building. Once your invoice is generated, you may visit the Farm Show building to make payment and receive credentials on the same day.
